CIRA to Host 2012 ICANN Meeting in Toronto

March 16, 2011

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that it will hold its Public Meeting and a meeting of its Board of Directors in Toronto from October 14 to 19, 2012. The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) will host this important event at the Westin Harbour Castle. This will be the second time CIRA hosts an ICANN Meeting, the first which was held in Montreal in 2003.  The last time this meeting was held in Canada was in Vancouver in 2005.

"This is a critical time in the development of the Internet. While the Internet's potential as a driver of social and economic change has never been greater, the challenges we are facing with regard to sustainable growth, security of the Domain Name System and online safety are also on the  rise," said Byron Holland, President and CEO of CIRA. "The ICANN meeting in 2012 will be an important one, and we are honoured to play a central role in organizing it."

Based in California, ICANN is the organization that manages the naming and number system for the Internet, and is at the heart of the Internet governance realm.  More than 1,000 people are expected to attend this event, including representatives from the private sector, governments and not-for-profit organizations.  For more information about ICANN, please visit http://icann.org.
